WoW lore too bad to be true - hopefully it was all just a dream?!

Hardly any character in WoW lore is as polarizing as Sylvanas Windrunner. Many players don't like how the character has been developing for several expansions now and what fate the Banshee Queen will meet in the Shadowlands finale. The story arc around Sylvanas and the lore of Shadowlands itself are now so heavily criticized by the community that some don't even take the story of WoW seriously anymore.

This goes so far that you can read more and more often in the forums that the whole story of Shadowlands might just be a bad joke and that we just dreamed it all.

The solution for the lore? The dog dreamed it

"Removing Shadowlands from Warcraft lore would be a real relief," this redditor writes, mutatis mutandis. If that's not a slap in the face to story writers, what is?

The author of these lines has also already commented on the very unsatisfactory story about Sylvanas and compared it to the end of GoT Season 8. And if you look at the forums, you can't really please anyone anymore. No matter what happens to Sylvanas, whether she becomes a martyr or receives a just punishment - nothing can make sense of the half-baked story arc; the writers at Blizzard around Narrative Lead Steve Danuser can bend all they want.

A common example of how the lore of World of Warcraft (buy now ) would look in the next expansion revolves around the Old God N'Zoth. This one is said to have mind-manipulated us so much in BfA and perhaps before that, that everything we've experienced in the last few addons was just a fever dream. In reality, we didn't defeat the Old God at all and wake up in a completely changed world.

Khadgar, the Awakener

Similar suggestions on how to still save the lore come from a meme template and allude to a similar scenario. According to Steve Danuser, Shadowlands is the end of WoW's third major story arc, which started back in WC3. However, many see the conclusion of the WC3 lore in Legion. So one way the story of WoW could continue is if Khadgar wakes us up from our dream.

"The burning of Teldrassil? The realm of death? N'Zoth being defeated by a necklace? Void elves? Heroes, what are you talking about, please? There's a giant sword in Azeroth that we need to take care of!"

In Shadowlands, players have faced arguably the greatest of cosmic forces and taken it all out. And the dungeon master's death animation has already been found in the game files as well. So we will also be victorious over death itself. And that in the realm of creation itself! How can this be topped? Will our dwarf hunter and his buddies soon simply extinguish every cosmic power, the light, the void and, in general, all evil in all universes and realities?

WoW Patch 9.2: Developer video on the end of eternity

None of the deities and elements seen so far stand a chance against the heroes who not so long ago earned their fame by defeating boars and gathering plants. The community is just longing to not be victorious at some point and again and again the example of N'Zoth is given, who in the end fooled us all and deleted the lore of the Shadowlands from the lore of WoW after all.

What do you think of the way the Sylvanas storyline has developed? Would you be happy if this part of the WoW story was just a bad dream? We are looking forward to your opinion in the comments.
